This practical training has been put together for yoga teachers and practitioners alike, who wish to develop and deepen their functional anatomy and biomechanics’ understanding and knowledge - framed in a yoga context. The course will be experiential, interactive and inclusive, you will not only learn theory, but also how to apply your new found knowledge to your practice or teaching. Through this course you can expect to learn about the anatomy and biomechanics of a human body, using your own innate body and intuitive intelligence in a functional and deliberate way, whilst understanding the processes behind range of motion (or lack thereof) and how yoga is much more than just movement, and therefore viewing yoga as a possible therapeutic tool for a more holistic approach. Major pathologies will also be covered, as well as how to “read” student bodies and ways to balance, strengthen and stretch specific body areas, and how to put this into a yoga class to better support yourself and your students. Will also touch upon the nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory system. This course does not abide by any specific yoga method or tradition, and therefore all yoga practitioners and teachers, from any and all backgrounds, are welcome. The course will be delivered in English, we speak fluent Portuguese and Italian if needed.
COURSE CONTENT An understanding of the anatomy and biomechanics of the human body, as well as any conditions/situations affecting us or our students, is an essential tool for yoga teachers as well as practitioners. This way one can adapt the practice taking into consideration that each body, each individual, is unique and therefore we will learn to tailor the practice to the individuals’ unique needs, limitations, and structure. In this way yoga can be viewed also as a therapeutic tool, and coupled with breath and awareness, can be incredibly powerful. The anatomical and physiology side will be covered in a clear and efficient way so it can easily be applied into asana practice: we will cover the body in segments, beginning at the feet/ ankles, and for each area we will look at the overall structure, bones, muscles, fascia, and joints. We will also study what can impede or limit movement in the area and in the specific joints, looking at the biomechanics, muscular and fascial chains, joint range of motion, as well as the effect of the nervous system. Major injuries and pathologies will be covered and how to possibly work on them and prevent further or new issues developing during yoga practice. We will cover how to use yoga as therapeutic tool, through a holistic practice covering the energetic, emotional and mental bodies, and how everything is connected, therefore a brief review will be made of the various koshas (sheaths or bodies). The use of language, intelligent cueing and props will be reviewed to make the practice and teaching of yoga more accessible and inclusive.
